e Pluribus Unum Health Plan-Um

Besides Bob Herbert and Paul Krugman, what are the good reasons for reading the New York Times? I know, I know, don't get you started.
Have they fired Bill Kristol yet?
Anyway, Paul Krugman's column today shows why its still a good idea to read the New York Times.
As far as a national health insurance plan, what are the reasons for not extending Medicare as the so-called public option? Its already in place, it already has a revenue source, it controls costs, insurance is available to cover what it doesn't, its overhead is 10% that of for-profit health insurance providers.
I understand the forces arrayed against any public option, much less Medicare. But are there any good reasons for not deploying Medicare coverage across all age groups, instead of just retirees, that don't have to do with buttressing the profit position of Aetna, Prudential, and etc.?
